The World in 2008
2008 will be filled with important events and possible shifts in political positions. What follows is a brief discussion and forecast on the year to come, based on Maria Helena’s reading of the Tarot Cards.
International Politics
The US Presidential elections on November 4th 2008 will undoubtedly be one of the main events of the year to come. Republicans and Democrats Parties will be busy campaigning and debating points of view. One theme to be discussed is the war in Iraq as we move into its fifth year. The outcome of the elections could well affect events in Iraq: a victory for the Democrats may mean the withdrawal of American troops, on the other hand, if the Republicans win, it’s probable the Americans soldiers won’t withdraw so soon and may even increase the number of troops on Iraqi territory.
The Tarot Card that dominates is the Ace of Wands meaning there will be some conflict and dispute, but a solution will be found. The final result of these elections will be a close call and the new President of the United States will be elected by a short advantage. However, the success will be temporary and the party’s promises will be no more than mere illusions. The situation caused in Iraq is not an easy one to fix and abandoning the country at this point would mean leaving them with and internal crisis. The end of this war may simply mean the beginning of a new one, that the world has been avoiding up till now, between the U.S. and Iran. We hope not.
Environment – Global Warming
Global warming, brought about by the emission of gases, the increase of pollution and excessive consumption of energy cause the greenhouse effect, is a problem that affects us all. The U.S.A, responsible for most of the world’s pollution, is the only industrial power not to have ratified the Quioto Protocol. Americans re-think their position in order to reach an agreement with the EU on global warming. On this theme, the Tarot Card is The Lovers meaning that an important decision must be made. During the next year, attempts will be made and a lot of money will be invested to find the best solution in order to reduce the effects and serious consequences of global warming.
Sport – China Olympic Games
The 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing in August are raising many issues and discussions from various Human Rights groups, environmental activists and religious organizations. China with its excellent athletes is expecting to win a considerable amount of medals, but the Tarot Card 8 of Wands reveals that the results will be below China’s expectations. There will be a lot of stir from protesters and as attention is focused on China, it may be the right time for foreign journalists to alert the world of China’s repressive politics.
The Economy
Bill Gates, the president of Microsoft, wants to step down from the place he has occupied since he founded Microsoft to focus on philanthropic activities. The 8 of Swords shows that there will be some crisis and obstacles in the way of this decision. Although this is what he and his wife Melinda, want as shown by the cards King of Coins and Queen of Coins, it isn’t an easy decision and they will meet impediments.
Portugal
National Politics
In 2008 the country will be busy preparing for the political events that will take place in 2009. The current political system must prove its competence in order to stay in power for another mandate otherwise the Portuguese will demand a change. The 7 of Swords shows that a new political option will emerge giving the Portuguese people new hope. The disappointment of the citizens may increase due to the socio-economic situation and the government’s attempts to fix the situation. But the Tarot Card the Ace of Wands and the World reveal that this government could well stay in power – under the leadership of José Socrates, and be rewarded for their initiatives, possibly even wining a second mandate with absolute majority in the 2009 elections.
Economy
2008 will be a rough year, economically speaking. We won’t see a drop in unemployment and the cost of living will increase once again. Nevertheless, the economy will witness a rise and for the first time Portugal could find itself at the same level of its European counterparts. The 9 of Coins indicates that the Portuguese must realise that they are responsible for their situation and should be proud of who they are their country. With this attitude, a new era will begin of greater productivity, consciousness and responsibility. For this to happen all individuals/citizens must stop relying on easy money through loans and mortgages that only create greater problems. They will then, finally realise they have been victims of an unfair system. They must learn to save in improve their quality of life.
Football
The EURO 2008 7-29 June will take place in Switzerland and Austria. Portugal will play its first matches against Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Turkey. Qualifying for the second phase won’t be an easy task but the 3 of Cups shows that the Portuguese team will show plenty of initiative and success. Rooted in a sincere friendship, which is essential for the good functioning of a team combined group spirit, under the supervision of a reliable manager, they will achieve the result they deserve, granting joy for all – players and fans!
